since I don't have my CDs anymore to reinstall (and am short enough on cash to not even consider even 5 or so bucks extra spending in the near future), I have held off on messing with installing my own mod selection, despite hearing that available mods are way past anything the last release had to offer. Is there any new release planned in the next few months, or would I wait indefinitely?

If there is nothing coming I will probably have to consider combining mods myself, but let's start with that.

No, but you can simply zip up the install folder or make a copy every time you want to install something new. The game's very portable in that way.

Oh, that is good to know! Not about the no new official version, but the copying/zipping thing of course. That should enable some freedom in terms of trying out things. I'll have a read-around, then maybe come back with a new, more specific question for mods, but I would appreciate some recommendations if people have some right away.

DepressivesBrot regularly releases fresh SCIs containing the absolute newest stuff. These are called unstable releases.

Stable releases differ from unstable releases in two ways:

  • To prevent the appearing of new bugs, they don't contain newer features. The last stable, 2014, was released almost a year after it was branched. Stable releases are inherently outdated. We pretend they are more thoroughly tested, but... not really.
  • We simply call them stable instead of unstable. This gets people all excited for some reason. I wonder what will happen if we call them orgasmic releases instead.

More serious answer: pick whatever SCI is recommended for a mod and use that. You can also try newer releases, but then you'll likely have to alter some xmls/inis/scripts. There is no extensive 'Things to do on version upgrade' list. Best guess would be to check the svn logs.

Edit: Hmpf. Ninjaed.

If you want, you can donate to me. This will not affect how and what I code, and I will not code specific features in return. I will be thankful though.

Hm, I was expecting a stable version to be actually tested thoroughly to actually /be/ stable... Guess the bug frequency I encountered should have informed me otherwise.

Let's start out slow, what does SCI stand for?

Edit: also, what mods do I have with the 2014 release? I understand that is a collection itself - what mods does it contain, so which "SCIs" should I be looking for?

It's not more or less tested than any other release.

SCI is a single-click-installer. Download the file, unzip the contents into your installation folder (over an original vanilla install), and the installation is done.

What you have with a SCI is 1.13. Mods are built on top of that - for example, a modder might add more weapons. In that case, his mod contains a few image and xml files that are basically installed on top of 1.13.

Stable 7609 release has many bugs, including critical, and since it's support was cancelled long ago, these bugs will never be fixed.
Most of bugs in stable 7609 are fixed in unofficial 7609+fix project, it's very well tested by players and works very stable, especially if you don't use some potentially buggy features or enable some buggy options, but if you want to use official releases it's better to download most recent unstable SCI and become a beta tester - at least you will be able to report bugs and hope someone will fix them.

Stable 7609 release allows you to play with some mods available like:
- SDO (Stock Data Overhaul)
- IoV 929 (beta version, working but with some XML bugs)
- Arulco Revisited
- Arulco Revisited + SDO
- Arulco Revisited + SDO + scaled loot
- Arulco Revisited + IoV929
- Wildfire 6.07
- Wildfire 6.07 + SDO
- Wildfire 6.07 + SDO + scaled loot
- Wildfire 6.07 + IoV929
- NightOps maps
- NightOps maps + SDO
- NightOps maps + AFS
- TypeP mod (Ja2 Reloaded)
- TypeP mod (Ja2 Reloaded) + SDO
- TypeP mod (Ja2 Reloaded) + AFS
- Arulco Vacations
- AFS
- Urban Chaos
- Deidranna Lives
- Legion2
- Aimnas-Bigmaps (use Easter 2015 item mod + actual maps)

These mods and mod combo's are working and tested with stable 7609 and should work without critical issues (except beta versions like Aimnas or IoV).

As for unstable releases, simple map mods like Wildfire 6.07 should work, but in general it's untested territory, you will have to discover yourself if particular mod works and how it should be changed/fixed to work with all new features.

Intimidating list. I'll try to read about the mods you listed on the forum, and come back with relevant questions. Thanks!

I'm still feeling kind of helpless with all those options. I would appreciate some input on which mod/mod combo to pick. Here is what I like especially about 1.13:

- tons of new guns, including the sci-fi ones
- new chance to hit and interrupt system
- roaming milita
- complete freedom re number and stats of IMPs
- the radio operator mechanic

My main goal is to preserve these features while looking to fix some bugs I encountered. What would be the best way to achieve this?

In addition to that I'm interested in new features and mechanics if they are implemented well, but I have literally no idea what to choose and what is out there. I tried reading around but it seems there is little info to be found (still dont know what wildfire does, and stock data overhaul I didnt even find). Arulco revisited at least has a nice feature overview I saw, and sounds pretty neat. Can someone help me out here?

Those are all part of the 7609 if I understand correctly. - To be honest, don't worry too much about which mod you play. You're going to play them all eventually, because JA2 is addicting as heck. I don't mean in a row. Sometimes you might take a year or two off, but you'll always come back for more :-P

Seriously though, the most recent unstable 1.13 is imho the way to go for anyone that's gone around JA2 a couple times, because you get to play with so many new things all the time, like taking prisoners of war, or blowing up ENEMY! helicopters with a MANPAD. - It does mean you'll spend a fair bit of time reading .ini files (i.e. options) to decide what to turn on or off.

On the other hand, if you just want a play through take the 7609 and any mod. My favorite mod sofar was Urban Chaos, I think, though I've never quite finished it and it can be a bit daunting (completely different country/cities/plot/etc. - very awesome though) - AIMNAS bigmaps is great if you love weapons, though the maps aren't all done yet, though many maps are, so good if you just want to play, less so for full playthrough.

What versions have you played so far?

EDIT: No version has complete freedom for IMP - all limited by <11 as far as I know.
EDIT2: What's the bugs you encountered?
EDIT3: Wildfire tries to give us the content of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagged_Alliance_2#Wildfire without being shit... - I think. For some reason lots of people really didn't like the original JA2:WF. http://ca.ign.com/articles/2004/04/06/jagged-alliance-2-wildfire-review -- Either way, at very least it's new maps to play on. happy
EDIT4: I take it given the other thread in AR that you've decided on AR? - I think an appropriate choice. It'll be fun! Keep in Mind: "But it's true... this mod is more challenging than stock v1.13. And it's meant to be that way!"

Thanks for your answer! And your latest edit is correct, I started playing AR now happy I like the new towns and sectors and followed the doc recommendation about finances and not using "drop all" etc. Made two stacked IMPs (a gunfighter/squadleader with ambidex, stealth, athletics, night ops, scouting and radio operator and a ranger/engineer/paramedic (full doc does not take even with fewer 2ndary skills) with ambidex, athletics, nights ops, bodybuilding and stealth) and hired meltdown and five of the cheapest guys with decent skill combos. Recruited Ira and just freed the 3rd omerta sector happy

Good idea re not getting too attached to a single mod, but this should provide plenty of new fodder (for the record, I've been through countless vanilla ja2 games over the years, then did some 1.13 7435 for ages, upgraded to 7609 a couple of months ago - when I also started playing ironman! - and now AR) and with my convenient folder backup I can even switch I guess happy

edit: bugs I had included crashing and hangup issues, frozen mouse pointers and more gameplay related stuff like the helicopter not refuelling after the first use. 10 max IMPs are fine for me, but I want the option to have those 10 happy I like my "supersoldier" games, although I decided to make only 2 for this first expert ironman AR game.
